The season of well dressing is now upon us in the Peak District and Derbyshire. A custom dating back to 1349, well dressing (also known as well flowering) involves the decoration of wells and springs with designs created from flower petals and other natural materials. The traditions stems from the period surrounding the Black Death when villagers would give thanks for the pure water drawn from wells. Today you will find a vast array of well dressings across the region, including a well dressing in our own village of Rowsley, between May and September. You can find a full list of well dressing locations and associated events on the Visit Peak District website, with new dates are currently being added daily.
