Sandy Brown’s Temple at Chatsworth House

Sandy Brown’s Temple at Chatsworth House

Temple by North Devon artist Sandy Brown was commissioned for Sotheby’s annual exhibition of monumental sculpture at Chatsworth House, Beyond Limits. The artist calls the temple “a temple for the self”, and has what Brown describes as a graduated entrance. As you approach the building you have to navigate stepping stones and ceremonial arches, and the entrance itself is a circular gap designed to prevent onrush. Brown envisioned the temple as a space for pause and for contemplation. The piece consists of over 5200 hand-painted ceramic tiles, and is inspired by Brown’s travels to Iran and Venice.
