The Peacock at Rowsley lies on the estate of Haddon Hall, where the owners of both historic buildings, Lord and Lady Manners, currently reside.
Haddon Hall has been described as “the most perfect house to survive from the middle ages,” offering a unique insight into early English life and culture. The Hall has charged the imagination of directors and audiences for decades, acting as the setting for many film and television productions. This year, Haddon Hall’s festive displays aim to inspire creativity and craft, with workshops, demonstrations and live music included in admission between 1st – 23rd December.
Here a few event highlights taking place throughout December at Haddon, located less than a five minute drive from The Peacock.
> Experience Christmas
Each year, Haddon Hall is transformed into a festive wonderland. In December 2019, the theme of this wonderland will revolve around craft and creativity, with daily workshops and demonstrations to inspire and engage visitors. Workshops will range from cocktail making and fashion styling to table decoration and floristry – all scattered throughout the beautifully decorated rooms of the manor house. The medieval kitchens will also host Children’s Crafts on select dates, with a whole host of traditional activities for younger guests.

> Candlelight Tours
Discover the joys of Haddon Hall at Christmas in the spellbinding twilight hours, guided by flickering candles and roaring fires. Visitors may also wish to combine a tour with a seasonal dinner in Haddon’s charming stable block restaurant. Tours will begin with a warming glass of mulled wine and a warm mince pie, before, in the company of your guide, you explore the halls and chambers in all their Christmas beauty.
> Music Recitals
For three hundred years, Haddon was left unlived in, unaltered and untouched. The Hall became known as ‘The Sleeping Beauty’. With the arrival of its new family, it was decided that the most gentle and beautiful way to reawaken the home and bring soul and life to its chambers, was through music. Each day, live music will serenade your visit as it floats through Haddon’s chambers, with festive recitals taking place at 12pm and 2pm.
> Christmas Card For The Queen
Join Haddon Hall in creating a huge Christmas card for the Queen and Royal Family, which will be located in the Long Gallery for guests to sign until 18th December. The card is to represent Haddon, its estate, its visitors and the local community, and local artists will be invited to contribute their work to the card.
Guests at The Peacock receive 50% off tickets to Haddon Hall, and would be situated a stone’s throw from the manor house itself.
